Why You Should Go: The name Sturgeon Moon comes from the giant lake sturgeon, an important food staple for the Native Americans in the Great Lakes region. Alternative August names for the August full moon: Flying Up Moon, a Cree term describing the time when young birds learn to fly. Corn moon, used by Algonquin and Ojibwe, and Harvest Moon used by the Dakota. Our walk will promote tuning into nighttime sounds of nature.
Things To Know Before You Go: Feel free to bring a headlamp or flashlight, red light preferred. A limited number of flashlights will be available from the Redding Land Trust. Long sleeves, bug spray, and closed toe shoes recommended. Review these hiking tips.
Optional: A lunar eclipse will happen starting at 9:23pm into midnight; hikers can join after the scheduled Moon Walk.
